Handcrafted Jewellery Sydney | What "Handcrafted" Really Means

"Handcrafted jewellery" might be the most overused phrase in the industry. You'll spot it on almost every website, market stall sign, and Instagram bio in Sydney and beyond. But here's the truth: not everything labelled handcrafted actually is.

If you're searching for genuinely handcrafted jewellery in Sydney, it pays to know what you're actually paying for — and why it matters.

The 3 Types of "Handcrafted" Jewellery

1. Fully Handmade (not to be confused with handcrafted)

Made entirely by hand, from raw metal through to the finished piece. This approach is slower and far more labour-intensive, often the most traditional approach to jewellery making.

2. Partially Handcrafted

A blend of:

  • CAD (computer-aided) design
  • Casting (often lost-wax casting)
  • Hand-finishing

This is how many modern jewellers — myself included — work, because it allows for both precision and individuality in the final piece.

3. Mass-Produced (Marketed as Handcrafted)

Designed by a brand, manufactured in bulk, then lightly finished or assembled before being sold as "handcrafted." This is where the term gets stretched thin — and where shoppers get misled.

Where My Jewellery Sits

My pieces sit somewhere between fully handcrafted and partially handcrafted, depending on the design:

  • Many pieces are made using sand casting, an entirely hands-on technique that produces one-of-a-kind textures you simply can't replicate by machine
  • Others use CAD and casting, particularly for more structured or symmetrical designs
  • Some steps — like CAD modelling — are occasionally outsourced, but every piece is finished and refined by me, personally, in my Sydney studio

No production lines. No bulk manufacturing. No identical copies rolling off a conveyor belt.

Why Handcrafted Jewellery Matters

When a piece is genuinely handcrafted:

  • It carries the mark of the person who made it
  • It can be reworked, repaired, and evolve with you over time
  • It won't look like everything else you've already seen

Most importantly, handcrafted jewellery is made to be worn for years — not replaced after one season.

Thinking About Reworking Old Jewellery?

Plenty of my clients come to me with pieces they no longer wear — rings from past relationships, tangled chains, outdated settings. Instead of letting them sit in a drawer, we can:

  • Melt the metal down and reuse it
  • Reset stones into a new design
  • Trade the piece in for credit toward something new
