Permanent jewellery has been one of the most talked-about jewellery experiences in Australia over the past few years — and if you've seen it on social media or heard a friend mention getting "welded" or "soldered", you've probably had questions.
What actually happens at an appointment? Does it hurt? Is it really permanent? What if you need to take it off?
Here's everything you need to know before you book.
What Is Permanent Jewellery?
Permanent jewellery is a fine chain — most commonly worn as a bracelet or anklet — that is welded directly onto your body without a clasp. Instead of a traditional fastening, the two ends of the chain are joined together using a pulse-arc welder, creating a seamless loop that sits on your wrist or ankle indefinitely.
Because there's no clasp to fiddle with, no catch to break, and nothing to take on and off, a permanent piece becomes part of your daily life in a way that regular jewellery rarely does. You wear it in the shower, to bed, to the gym, to work. It's just there — always.
At Zoë Alexandria, the service is called WELD. It uses a precision pulse-arc welder to fuse the chain ends together in a process that takes a fraction of a second and is completely painless.
How Does the Welding Process Work?
A pulse-arc welder delivers a concentrated burst of energy to a single point — in this case, the tiny jump ring connecting the two ends of your chain. The energy fuses the metal together instantly, leaving a clean join with no sharp edges, no visible seam, and no heat transferred to your skin.
It's not like the welding you'd picture in a factory. There's no open flame, no smoke, no protective gear required. It's a small, precise tool — and the process itself takes about one second.
The result is a join that's just as strong as the rest of the chain. In practice, if a permanent piece ever does break, it's almost always the chain itself rather than the weld point.
Does It Hurt?
No. The pulse-arc welder works so quickly and with such precision that there's no sensation at all. The tool doesn't touch your skin — it only contacts the metal — and the energy is directed entirely into the join point.
Most people are surprised by how anticlimactic it is. You look away, there's a quick flash of light, and it's done.
What Metals Are Used?
At Zoë Alexandria, permanent jewellery is offered in two metals:
14k gold — Available in yellow gold and white gold. 14k gold is the standard for permanent jewellery because it's durable enough for everyday wear without being brittle, and it won't tarnish or discolour your skin. Yes, it costs more than the alternatives — but permanent jewellery is designed to live with you, and quality matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Sterling silver — A more accessible price point that still offers genuine quality. Sterling silver may require slightly more care to maintain its brightness over time, but it's a solid choice for everyday wear.
What you won't find at WELD is brass, gold-filled, or gold-plated chain. These materials simply aren't suited to something you'll wear without removing.
Chain and Charm Options
Part of what makes a permanent jewellery appointment enjoyable is the selection process. At Zoë Alexandria, there are five chain styles to choose from:
- Aurora — A double cut oval link chain, delicate and catches the light beautifully. Available in silver and 14k yellow gold.
- Selene — A smooth rolo style chain, clean and classic. Available in silver, yellow gold, and white gold.
- Freya — A paperclip link chain, slightly chunkier and very on the wrist. Available in silver, yellow gold, and white gold.
- Iris — A twisted oval link cable chain with great texture. Available in silver and 14k yellow gold.
- Hera — A figaro chain, alternating links with a more structured look. Available in silver, yellow gold, and white gold.
Charms and birthstone connectors are also available to add a personalised touch — gemstone and diamond options that clip or are welded into the chain.
Is Permanent Jewellery Actually Permanent?
Essentially, yes — but with a practical caveat.
The chain has no clasp, so it can't be removed the way regular jewellery can. In that sense, it stays on indefinitely. However, if you ever truly need it off — for a medical procedure, an MRI, or simply because you've changed your mind — it can be cut with scissors or small cutters. The chain is fine enough that this is straightforward and takes seconds.
So "permanent" means no clasp, not indestructible. A permanent bracelet can break if it catches on something or is subjected to significant force — chain stretching and breakage can occur depending on your lifestyle, just as with any fine jewellery. If a break does happen within two weeks of your appointment (indicating a faulty weld), Zoë Alexandria will re-weld it at no charge. Breakages outside that window can be repaired for a small fee.
Will It Set Off Airport Security?
This is one of the most common questions — and the answer is almost always no. The chains used for permanent jewellery are so fine and contain so little metal that they typically don't register on standard airport metal detectors. Many people travel internationally with their permanent pieces without any issue.
That said, every airport and scanner is different, and individual experiences can vary. If you're concerned, it's worth mentioning it to security staff before going through.
What Does a WELD Appointment Look Like?
Each appointment at Zoë Alexandria is 15 minutes — enough time to browse and choose your chain, try on different options, add a charm if you'd like one, and get welded. The studio is in Engadine in Sydney's south, and appointments run Thursday through Sunday.
The appointment is relaxed and personal. You'll talk through the chain options, Zoë will size the chain to fit your wrist or ankle exactly (no standard sizing here — it's custom fitted to you on the day), and then it's welded on. You leave with your new piece already on (plus to celebrate the experience, you'll also take home a polaroid photo and polishing cloth).
WELD gift cards are also available, making this one of the most enjoyable gifts you can give someone — an experience and a piece of jewellery in one.
How Old Do You Need to Be?
You need to be at least 16 years old for a permanent jewellery appointment. Anyone aged 13–15 can be welded with a parent or guardian present.
One Piece Per Appointment
Each appointment covers one piece of permanent jewellery per person. If you'd like a bracelet and an anklet, or if you're coming with a friend who also wants a piece, you'll each need to book separate appointments.
Ready to experience it for yourself? Appointments are available Thursday through Sunday at the Zoë Alexandria studio in Engadine, Sydney.
