The Seven Chakras - A Beginners Guide

·

So you've heard the word 'chakra' thrown around, but what exactly does it mean?

Chakra is an old Sanskrit word that literally means wheel. This is because the energy, or prana, that moves inside of you is spinning and rotating. This energy has 7 centers in your body - the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. The 7 chakras provide the right balance of energy to every part of your body, mind, and spirit, but if one of your chakras is blocked this can cause an imbalance in your health and wellness.

The Root Chakra is the chakra of stability, security, and our basic needs. The root chakra is comprised of whatever grounds you to stability in your life. Crystals that support the root chakra include Smoky Quartz, Hematite, Tourmaline, Rhodonite, and Garnet. In general, red stones and crystals are associated with the root chakra.

The Sacral Chakra, located in the lower abdomen below the navel, is the second in your seven chakras. This chakra is associated with the emotional body, sensuality, and creativity. Healing stones for the sacral chakra include, Carnelian and Citrine. In general, stones with orange, golden or red-orange color are considered supportive stones for the Sacral Chakra.

The Solar Plexus Chakra provides a source of personal power and relates to self-esteem, warrior energy, and the power of transformation. There are many stones and crystals that are wonderful for healing and supporting the Solar Plexus Chakra. A few of these stones include Pyrite, Citrine and Rutilated Quartz.

The Heart Chakra is the fourth primary chakra. In Sanskrit, anahata means "unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten". Anahata is associated with balance, calmness, and serenity. Some of the most popular stones for the heart chakra include Rose Quartz, Amazonite, Green Aventurine and Green Tourmaline.

The Throat Chakra sits in the area of the throat, jaw, neck, mouth, and thyroid. As the throat chakra governs the mouth, tongue, and neck, it relates to communication and your ability to understand and speak your inner truth “purely”. Blue stones are associated with the throat chakra, including Amazonite, Turquoise, Aquamarine and Lapis lazuli.

The Third Eye Chakra is known as the 'seat of intuition', or your sixth sense. It is associated with heightened spiritual growth, positive attitudes, and a more generous and humanitarian attitude towards life. Labradorite and Amethyst crystals are the most powerful stones associated with the sixth chakra.

The Crown Chakra is the energy center of universal knowledge. It is the 7th and topmost part of our chakra governs how we think and how we react or respond to the world. The crown chakra influences the brain and the nervous system, as well as the emotions and the level of understanding and enlightenment. The best crystals for harnessing the crown chakra are Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Moonstone and Herkimer Diamond.

While each chakra has its own distinct properties, they’re all thought to work as a system which means that if one’s out of balance, it affects all the rest. So if you have signs of multiple blocked chakras, just know that it’s totally normal—and any good yoga class or healer will work to align all of them at once, creating a clear channel for prana to flow from head to toe.
